KEY CHALLENGES WITH MASTERING ENGLISH

Children face several challenges when learning to read in English. These difficulties arise from the fact that English has 44 sounds with only 26 letters. When not provided with proper instruction, children struggling to learn to read, can face further difficulties throughout their education and beyond.

  • SYNTHETIC PHONICS teaches that each letter has a common sound. This is a good starting point for learning to read, but English’s complex spelling patterns make it just the beginning.
  • Words may be spelt exactly the same with completely DIFFERENT PRONUNCIATIONS and meanings.
  • Letters can have MULTIPLE SOUNDS and can be combined to make other sounds.
